Be A HERO PROJECT in Ganta, Liberia: In partnership with Hope for the Nations, a Security Wall will be built around the New Hope Academy School to protect the children, staff and equipment on-site from passersby travelling through the campus grounds going to other places.
Summary of the situation in Liberia
In 2008, nearly five years after the end of a brutal civil war that sent sexual violence statistics soaring, Liberia's rape rate is still shockingly high. Fighting has raged in the country since the start of a rebel incursion in mid-2000. During Liberia's 14 year civil conflict 850,000 people fled their homes and at least 270,000 were killed. During the war the rape of girls and women was widespread. Since peace was sealed in 2003, sex crimes - and impunity for them - have persisted throughout the country. Unlike other crimes like murder, theft of property, or criminal mischief, the regular courts do not regularly deal with rape or sexual violence cases, either because the complainants are not willing to pursue the case or state prosecutors are busy handling other cases.
The United Nations Mission in Liberia's (UNMIL) latest human rights situation report released in November 2007 identified the failure to try cases of gender-based violence as a "challenge to the rule of law and the protection of fundamental human rights" in post-war Liberia. "The failure of the state to prosecute impacted negatively on the rights of women and girls to equal protection afford by the law," the report said.

The Project: New Hope Academy School
Recently, we built a school in Ganta, Liberia called New Hope Academy. The school has 6 classrooms and 22 teachers presently teaching 465 students in the morning and 117 in the afternoon. It has also been fitted with a satellite dish so that the school can be the first in the area with internet access. In time, this new school will allow over 1000 children to be educated from Kindergarten to grade 12.
New Proposed Project: Security Wall
The school is a tremendous success. The concern that comes now is the safety of the children, staff and equipment at the school due to the many people travelling through the campus to get to other places. A security wall, approximately 7 feet tall and made of cement and wire link all 1700 feet around the campus is a real need for New Hope Academy School.
Estimated cost for the Security Wall is $45,000 USD.
100% of all funds donated for this project will be applied directly to the project. Be A HERO does not keep anything for administration. Be A HERO is able to do this because the Hero Partnership and Pillar Program participants designate their donations specifically for administration.
